Why are they pink?
They are born gray. Their feathers turn pink due to carotenoid pigments in the shrimp and algae they consume.
Why do they stand on one leg?
Scientists believe it's to conserve body heat (thermoregulation) and reduce muscle fatigue.
How many species are there?
There are six species: Greater, Lesser, Chilean, Andean, James's (Puna), and American (Caribbean).
Can they fly?
Yes! They are excellent flyers and often migrate at night to avoid predators.
